A photograph from the Paul Preston David Collection at the Rehoboth Beach Museum shows an early form of transportation at the intersection of Rehoboth Avenue and the Boardwalk.

Michael Morgan will discuss the many ways visitors and residents alike travelled to and around Rehoboth Beach from the 1870s to the early 1900s. The talk will begin at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Rehoboth Beach Museum, 511 Rehoboth Ave. Suggested donation to the event is $5; call for reservations at 302-227-7310.

Morgan will bring to life the modes of transportation in the early years of Rehoboth Beach, including trains, alternative transportation and the bicycle craze which even today is prominent.

“Rehoboth rode to success on the wheels of the locomotive and the automobile. If it were not for trains and cars, the resort would be a sleepy little village of beachcombers, crabbers and fishermen,” Morgan says. The presentation topic complements the museum’s Cruisin’ exhibit now on display through March 2015.

Morgan is a freelance writer who has published articles on the history of coastal Delaware for over 30 years.  The popular “Rehoboth Beach: A History of Surf and Sand,” was published in 2009. Morgan’s column, Delaware Diary, appears weekly in the Delaware Coast Press, and Sussex Journal, another column, is featured in The Wave newspaper.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum and the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society offer many opportunities to dive into the history of Rehoboth Beach through memberships, educational programs and exhibits, both permanent and temporary.

Parking is available at the museum, and the facility is handicapped accessible.
